16. August
A "Hash" is a Caribbean social event, so it has nothing to do
with drugs like the name could imply at first.
It is rather a paper trail hunt with which one takes part either in
walking or running. In the Hash season it takes place every two weeks at
another wonderful place of the island. The participation fee amounts to
only 2 EC, thus less than 1 US $ and afterwards there is foods and
drinks and socializing. The age of the participants ranges from 10 to 70
years.
The Hashmaster lays out a paper trail, partly also wrong tracks with
paper shred. One pursues the track which leads cross country and
definitively mountain up and down. The Hashers, mostly approx. 100 or so
can walk, jog, or run, thus the big group fast dissolves and everybody
has to find his own way.
Our hash started in Marian and was approx. 3 miles long. It was a full
moon hash, it started at 7 pm with s full moon, and everybody was armed
with a flashlight to shine his way. It was a great event, because we
would have never dared to explore the island by night.
Once Tim got scared for a second when he, as the first of our group, was
shining his way and suddenly a cow was standing right in front of him.
It was pitch black in the woods, no moonlight here, and we just didn't
see the cow at first.
We were pretty exhausted and sweaty as the boys were running upfront and
we "old ones" had to keep up with them>
But is was a fun event and we might participate in the next hash again.
Here is the certificate that every virgin hasher gets in a special
ceremony:
