2. December

Excursion Day     ( and of course lots of new pictures in the photo section)

Today we want to discover St. Lucia. We have a rental car and want to make a island tour.
The girl at the rental car station recommended to go see the active volcano at the Pitons. Okay, said and done.
We started driving South along the very curvy and mountainous road.
For lunch we stopped at a very nice hotel at Anse Cochon (many names are in French here, and lots of locals also speak Creole, a mix between English and French, because the French were in St. Lucia in the 17 and 18th century).
So first we drove to the sulphur pools and the waterfalls. Unfortunately we were not too impressed, expected more. Stoffel hopped into the sulphur pool, but the water looked so murky and was not as warm as usual du to previous rainfalls, so we opted not to go in.

The visit of the volcano crater in Soufriere was very impressive. We could drive the car into the crater! Well, it kinda looked like a valley at first, because we had to walk to the area where there was all the steam and water bubbling out of the ground.

     Vulkan
--> underneath the steam and at the right bottom corner you can see the grey water spitting out of the earth.

When we got out of the car, we noticed a terrible smell of rotten eggs - and we paid an entrance fee for that ?!?
Well, our guide explained the smell due to the high sulphur concentrate. But as soon as we walked towards the gated area and could see the true crater, we forgot about the smell and were excited. We could see the grey water that contained very many minerals, lots of steam and on some days the waters shoot up up to 30 feet.
The volcano broke out about 200 years ago, and of course nobody knows when it will break out again.

After this great experience, we continued our drive down South to Vieux Fort, where the boys wanted to go to Anse Sable, also known as Sandy Beach, there should be lots of waves. Vieux Fort was a horrible town, very dirty and old. But the beach, just outside of it, was nice, and the boys enjoyed jumping the waves with their boogie boards. We had dinner at a small beach bar next to the kite station before heading back home via the East coast road.

Here are some pictures from Sandy Beach:
